Mental Strategies Addition (+) and subtraction (-)

We teach children a range of different ways to add and subtract numbers. We want

them to look for patterns and use them as much as they can. We want them to have

good number sense – an understanding of how and why different ways to add and

subtract work well.

The goal is for them to be able to do it in their head in a way that makes sense to them by the end of Year 2.

To develop number sense, students learn:

Counting on and
counting back

14 + 3 …
start at 14, then count on to 17 ie 15, 16, 17.
12 – 3 …
start at 12 then count back to 9, ie 11, 10, 9.

To bridge to 10

Find the nearest 10
eg 17 + 5; 17 and 3 is 20 and add 2 more

Addition facts to 10
0 + 10, 1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5

Doubles
1 + 1, 2 + 2, 3 + 3, 4 + 4

Doubles + 1
1 + 2, 2 + 3, 3 + 4, 4 + 5

Splitting numbers into 10s
and ones
62 = 6 tens and 2 ones
Counting in 10s
eg 5, 15, 25, 35, 45 or 2, 12, 22, 32
etc for 58+ 30 start at 58, then think 68, 78, 88
Counting down in 10s

eg 97, 87, 77, 67, 57 for 85 – 40 start at 85,
then think 75, 65, 55, 45
You can add in any order but
not subtract in any order
36 + 45 = 45 + 36 but 76 – 32 32 – 76

This could be helpful in understanding the terminology used in class when encouraging your child to practice and understand mental strategies. Remember they have until the end of Year 2 to perform simple addition and subtraction calculations using a range of strategies.

ANZAC DAY

Tuesday 25 April - Mass and March

On this day, we will be paying respect to those who made great sacrifices during the many conflicts Australia and New Zealand has been involved in over the years.

We start each year with a Mass and if you would like to attend it will be held at St Patricks in Beenleigh at 9.00 am. If you cant be there for the mass, you can meet us in the church carpark at 10.00am in full school uniform (plus drink bottle).

The march starts at 10.30 am, and parents meet us at the end of the march and collect their children.

The service begins at 11.00 am.

End of Term 1

Dear Parents

Happy Easter and we would like to wish all families a dry and safe holiday break.

As the term unexpectedly finished early due to the unprecedented wet weather coming from North Queensland all learning will continue into next term. The students have almost completed their Gold Coast Suns Media Art presentations and will be ready to view early next term. The children decided that using the Blog was the best platform to showcase their presentations to the Year 2 parent community as it was the safest online forum. They are very excited to be able to share these presentations with you all.

Another post will be made available before commencement of next term outlining the WALTs and learning intentions for Term 2.

We understand that the learning from Year 1 to Year 2 may have been a big transition but be reassured the children have transitioned well. Remember that we are available should you have any questions or concerns that you may have about your child’s learning.

Thank you for a great start to the year and we look forward to seeing you all in Term 2.

MT Cross Country - Year 2s are amazing!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Cross Country on Tuesday. We were very thankful that the weather was not raining or miserable. Mel and I were very excited and proud to see our boys and girls lining up for their endurance run. When the whistle blew their legs and arms started to pump quickly as they came down the track with smiles on their faces - it was perfect.

As children crossed the finish line with tired bodies and determination in their eyes, they all made it!

Congratulations to you all - woo hoo!!

Gold Coast Suns Community Camp and Little Legends Launch

Dear Parents / Caregivers

The Gold Coast Community Camp was an extremely successful day for the AFL and the Year 2 students. It was more than we could have hoped for as the coach and the players interacted positively with the students. The children were able to take still Ipad photos, ask their prepared leading questions and participate in the Gold Coast Suns theme song.

We made the home page on the Brisbane Catholic Education website, complete with an article on our experience. Check it out...

AND... we are also on the Gold Coast Suns home page.

Thank you for your support in helping us provide links to real world opportunities that will enrich your child's life experiences and enhance their future learning. As a result, the children will now be reflecting on their experience and with a partner they will produce some Media Art to share on this blog space - a safe online community. In discovery they will be using the software program PhotoStory 3.

If your child was absent during this experience do not worry as we have thought about everything! Your child has reflected on the images and video footage from the day, they have asked questions from other children in the class, with a buddy they have participated in a 'Look, See, Feel' feedback session and these students will also have a buddy who did attend the Community Camp when they begin to work on their Media Art.

The Media Art presentations are aiming to be completed and ready to view by the end of term.

Well done Year 2 we were both SO proud of you!

Kind Regards

Mrs Lyons and Ms Eyears
